Liverpool’s first-choice defender, Virgil Van Dijk has named his five best defenders in the history of the Premier League.
The Dutchman was speaking in an interview with BT Sports which was hosted by Rio Ferdinand ahead of the UEFA Champions League against Real Madrid in Paris on Saturday, May 28th, 2022. The Liverpool player named Ferdinand as the best defender in Premier League history.
You [Ferdinand] could also play in the modern-day era. Back in the day, you were so important for the United team. All the English centre-backs, in general, looked up to you. I think you were an icon as a defender. The way, your presence at centre-back is very important, being good with and without the ball. You tackled a little bit more than I do.
He named former Manchester City’s captain, Vincent Kompany, Manchester United’s Jaap Stam, Chelsea’s John Terry and Liverpool’s legend Sami Hypia to complete his five best defenders.
Van Dijk has been in an amazing form since he returned from an injury that ruled him out of the Liverpool team last season for 10 months. He will hope the Reds win their seventh Champions League title when they face Real Madrid.
