Will Smith and Chris Rock had a shocking moment live on TV during this year’s Oscars (2022). Rock mounted the stage to present the Oscar award for a documentary feature. He joked about Jada Pinkett Smith, referring to her as “G.I. Jane” due to her shaved head (Jada has recently been struggling with alopecia). Smith immediately took the stage and slapped Chris Rock. In the proceeding moments of silence, it first appeared to be a joke, but Smith yelled at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth!” as he returned to his seat.

Many in the audience appeared to be stunned by the altercation. Diddy, who was the next presenter on the stage, addressed the situation by saying “Will and Chris, we’re going to solve this like family. Right now we’re moving on with love. Everybody make some noise.” Diddy appeared to introduce the 50th-anniversary celebration to “The Godfather.”

During the commercial break, both Meredith O. Sullivan and Denzel Washington came to Will to have a discussion. During his best actor speech, Smith revealed that Washington said to him, “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.” Following the incident, Sullivan continued to visit Smith at every commercial break.

Will Packer (an Oscar producer) also visited Smith before the best actor category was announced. The performance in “King Richard” is what gave Smith his nomination for the award – and later his win.

Smith said in his speech, “Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,”. Smith later proceeded to apologize to the Academy and to his fellow nominees for his actions. However, nothing in his apology was directed towards Rock.

Last year, Pinkett Smith revealed she shaved her head after struggling with alopecia. During the awards evening, Rock ended up awarding the documentary Oscar to Questlove for “Summer of Soul.” Asked in the Oscars press room about Smith hitting Rock, Questlove responded by saying, “I’m not talking about that. This is about the Harlem cultural festival.”

As of the time of writing this article, we have heard no further comments about the incident from Rock. Nigeria Cast will continue to monitor the situation.
